. >> let me bring in mark kelly, husband of gabby giffords. mark, another shooting. when you see this, is change possible? is -- have you been able to see any results from the work you and your wife have been going so far? >> well, anderson, change is always possible. but for the past 30 years you have to give the gun lobby a lot of credit. they have an enormous amount of influence on capitol hill. that makes it very difficult for us even after newtown to get something as common sense as expanded background checks passed. but i truly believe we can do something about it. it's just going to take a little bit of time. you know, things in washington, as we can see move very slowly. but if people get engaged and i really believe that a lot of people care about this issue and they don't want us to stay where we are with regards to gun violence which is 15 to 20 times the death rate from guns than any other country we would want to be compared to. we can do something about it but it's a matter of people standing up and asking that their members of congress take action. >>

as senator feinstein has already told the committee, we heard testimony from captain mark kelly who recounted what happened in tucson that day when the shooter had to change magazine, and christina taylor, the 9-year-old who perished that day from the 13th bullet fired probably would be alive if the magazine used by the shooter had been limited to 10 rounds. the same is true in newtown where children were able to escape because the shooter had to change magazines on that day. more than 10 children are alive today because of his need to change magazines. and more would be if his magazine had been limited to 10 rounds, as our legislation would do. so i recognize that there are concerns about it. we've heard them. the overwhelming majority of the american people are in favor of this legislation, and the opponents fail to reflect the concern that goes beyond newtown but certainly newtown is a call to action. it has created a sense of urgency that americans feel and i hope the committee will reflect that sense of urgency in approving this legislation. >> mr. chairman. >> thank you, mr. chairman. m

>> right off to the left, 20 feet from gabby giffords and mark kelly. as we watch the president's cabinet come into this chamber, george, you will see a confident president come in. he is convinced that the american people are with him on the big issues. and he is also convinced that he has a mandate coming out of that election. so, he will be at times confrontational in this speech. compromising, willing to compromise, but only so much with the republicans. the key issue, as you mentioned, is the economy. they gave us some excerpts of the speech early. one that hit me was that he said that the economy, an economy that creates job, good, middle class jobs must be the north star for our efforts, for everything we do. and that will be the message here. this is a divided chamber. john boehner, right over his shoulder, just this morning, told reporters that he doesn't think the president has the guts to make the tough decisions to deal with the deficit. that was an exact quote. "i don't think he has the guts to do it." so, a divided chamber to be sure. >> t
